Hi AbeNeedsAnswers,

We're told that Chris earned $X per hour for the first 40 hours worked plus 22 dollars per hour for each hour worked beyond 40 hour and that Chris earned a total of 816 dollars by working 48 hours last week. We're asked for the value of x ?

With the given information, we can create the following equation (and solve):
40X + 8(22) = 816
40X + 176 = 816
40X = 640
X = 16

Final Answer: D

First option: algebra!

Say Chris worked h hours in all.

Total $ = $40 * x + $22 * (h - 40)

We know h = 48 and total $ = $816, so

816 = 40x + 22*(48 - 40)

816 = 40x + 176

640 = 40x

16 = x

Second option: plug in!

Since answer C is in the middle of the answers, we can start there. If it works we're done, and if doesn't we'll know whether to go up (to D) or down (to B).

C = $15, so Chris would make $15*40 + $22*8. That's not enough money, so we need to go UP.

We then try D, and everything works out.

We can create the equation:

40x + 22(48 - 40) = 816

40x + 22(8) = 816

40x + 176 = 816

40x = 640

x = 16
