700+ Rejected Proposal

by challenger63 » Fri Jan 25, 2013 8:57 am
At nearly thirty-eight million dollars, one of the least costly options being considered, the delegate's proposal was ultimately rejected not only on account of its sizable budget but also on account of its considerable risk.

A) At nearly thirty-eight million dollars, one of the least costly options being considered, the delegate's proposal was ultimately rejected not only on account of its sizable budget but also on account of its considerable risk.

B) Even at nearly thirty-eight million dollars, the delegate's proposal was among the less costly options being considered; it was ultimately rejected not on account of its sizable budget but on account of its riskiness.

C) The delegate's thirty-eight million dollar proposal, which was ultimately not rejected on account of its sizable budget but on account of its riskiness, had actually been one of the less costly options being considered.

D) The delegate's thirty-eight millions dollar proposal, nevertheless among the least costly options being considered, was ultimately not rejected on account of its sizable budget, but its riskiness.

E) Ultimately rejected due not just to its sizable budget but also to its considerable risk, the delegate's proposal, even at thirty-eight million dollars, was one of the least costly options under consideration.

OA will be provided later after some discussions.

A) At nearly thirty-eight million dollars, one of the least costly options being considered, the delegate's proposal was ultimately rejected not only on account of its sizable budget but also on account of its considerable risk.

options has contradictory statement.

B) Even at nearly thirty-eight million dollars, the delegate's proposal was among the less costly options being considered; it was ultimately rejected not on account of its sizable budget but on account of its riskiness.

The best available choice.

C) The delegate's thirty-eight million dollar proposal, which was ultimately not rejected on account of its sizable budget but on account of its riskiness, had actually been one of the less costly options being considered.

I don't think C is correct choice; I think instead of "not rejected on" it should be "rejected not only on...but also on...".

D) The delegate's thirty-eight millions dollar proposal, nevertheless among the least costly options being considered, was ultimately not rejected on account of its sizable budget, but its riskiness.

it contain double negating words "Nevertheless" and "not" altogether

E) Ultimately rejected due not just to its sizable budget but also to its considerable risk, the delegate's proposal, even at thirty-eight million dollars, was one of the least costly options under consideration.

E sounds very weird and wordy.

A) At nearly thirty-eight million dollars, one of the least costly options being considered, the delegate's proposal was ultimately rejected not only on account of its sizable budget but also on account of its considerable risk.

options A has a double modifier/ misplaced modifier
B) Even at nearly thirty-eight million dollars, the delegate's proposal was among the less costly options being considered; it was ultimately rejected not on account of its sizable budget but on account of its riskiness.

Option B uses Less when it should be least. Also, in order to use a semicolon, in this case, you would need a transitional phrase or a conjunctive adverb. i.E. ;however,
C) The delegate's thirty-eight million dollar proposal, which was ultimately not rejected on account of its sizable budget but on account of its riskiness, had actually been one of the less costly options being considered.

Again incorrect form of Less vs least. on account but on account seems odd to me. Not quite sure the technical reason why it is incorrect it just seems weird
D) The delegate's thirty-eight millions dollar proposal, nevertheless among the least costly options being considered, was ultimately not rejected on account of its sizable budget, but its riskiness.

This is just a mess......

E) Ultimately rejected due not just to its sizable budget but also to its considerable risk, the delegate's proposal, even at thirty-eight million dollars, was one of the least costly options under consideration.

E is correct, modifiers are placed correctly. Uses the corect version of LEAST vs Less.

That is my .02 cents ;)

IMO E

It has correct use of "not just - but also" and the first part of the sentence that correctly modifies the delegate's proposal.

Intend is to emphasize that the proposal was rejected for 2 reasons (sizable budget and high risk)

E - The main intent of sentence is changed completely (here sentence emphasizes PROPOSAL WAS ONE OF THE LEAST COSTLY OPTIONS). NOT JUST...BUT ALSO is not correct idiom. what does DUE TO modifies - it has to modify a noun but IMO REJECTED is not noun and PROPOSAL cannot be DUE TO

D - changed the meaning (it says PROPOSAL was rejected not because of BUDGET but because of HIGH RISK, while the initial intent to say BOTH are good reasons for rejection)

C - NOT REJECTED ON ACCOUNT...BUT ON ACCOUNT (not correct idiom). Like E, C also changed the meaning (here sentence emphasizes PROPOSAL WAS ONE OF THE LEAST COSTLY OPTIONS)

B - some change by using EVEN but good 2nd best option; IMO only problem is the use of RISKINESS(after ITS we require a noun).

IMO A
