The number of vehicles on the road classified as "light trucks" in the United States increased by more than twice from 1980 to 1992.

A. increased by more than twice

B. increased more than two times

C. more than doubled

D. was more than doubled

E. had more than doubled

my concern : is it really wrong to make an adverb as object of preposition "by" ,as is done in A .if that is really the case then is it always wrong to say :"increased by two times" or "increased by twice"

twice/doubled/ two times imply "increase". I'd go with C!

I'll go with D. The number of vehicles was more than doubled from 1980 to 1992;I think, in C verb is missing

this is not correct !! "doubled" is in fact the verb here !!

I will go with Answer-B
Because in question it is mentioned that The number of vehicles INCREASED MORE THAN TWICE.
whereas answer C,D,and E show That The number of vehicles JUST MORE THAN DOUBLED FROM ORIGINAL NUMBER.


The number of vehicles on the road classified as "light trucks" in the United States increased by more than twice from 1980 to 1992.

A. increased by more than twice

B. increased more than two times

C. more than doubled

D. was more than doubled

E. had more than doubled
