A political candidate collected $1749 from a fund raising dinner. If each supporter contributed atleast $ 50, what is the greatest possible number of contributors at the dinner?

In order to get the biggest number of contributors, you should divide 1749 by 50, thus assuming that every person spent only the smallest amount of money. Divide 1749 by 50 and you get 34, remainder 49. So I believe that you had 33 guys who contributed with $50 and a 34th guy who contributed with $99 (since you can't have anyone with $49 contribution). I'd say the answer is B.

We can let the number of supporters = x. Thus:

50x = 1749

x = 1749/50 = 34 remainder 49.

Thus, the greatest number of contributors must be 34 people.

Answer: B
