In virtually all types of tissue in every animal species, dioxin induces the production of enzymes that are the organism's trying to metabolize, or render harmless, the chemical that is irritating it.

(A) trying to metabolize, or render harmless, the chemical that is irritating it
(B) trying that it metabolize, or render harmless, the chemical irritant
(C) attempt to try to metabolize, or render harmless, such a chemical irritant
(D) attempt to try and metabolize, or render harmless, the chemical irritating it
(E) attempt to metabolize, or render harmless, the chemical irritant


So, I understand the answer is (E).
Can anyone explain me how this sentence's structure is?
Especially the last part ' the chemical that is irritating it. ', I don't get how it's connected.

A possessive such as organism's serves not as a noun but as an ADJECTIVE.
In A, B and D, the referent for it (pronoun) seems to be organism's (adjective).
Since the referent for a pronoun should be not an adjective but a noun -- and C and E avoid this issue -- eliminate A, B and D.

In C, attempt to try is redundant.
Eliminate C.

The correct answer is E.

OA: enzymes that are the organism's attempt to metabolize the chemical irritant
A body under attack produces various substances.
In biology circles, these substances are sometimes deemed the body's ATTEMPT to defend itself.
Here, ENZYMES constitute the organism's ATTEMPT to defend itself against the chemical irritant.

Enzymes that are the organism’s trying…. Does not make sense.

(A) trying to metabolize, or render harmless, the chemical that is irritating it
Enzymes that are the organism’s trying…. Does not make sense.

(B) trying that it metabolize, or render harmless, the chemical irritant
Enzymes that are the organism’s trying…. Does not make sense.

(C) attempt to try to metabolize, or render harmless, such a chemical irritant
Attempt to try is double whamy does not make sense.

(D) attempt to try and metabolize, or render harmless, the chemical irritating it
Attempt to try is double whamy does not make sense.

(E) attempt to metabolize, or render harmless, the chemical irritant
