The commission has directed advertisers to restrict the use of the word "natural" to foods that do not contain color or flavor additives, chemical preservatives, or nothing that has been synthesized.

Choices A B C were clearly wrong. I am confused between the following

D or anything that has been
E and anything


If you pick D then it does not remain parallel- color or flavor additavies, cehmical preservatives or anything that has been synthesized.
If you pick E the answer is parallel - do not contain color or flavor additives, chemical preservatives, and anything synthesized.
But the OA is D.Can anyone explain.

Why do you say that if you pick D, the sentence is not parallel? E changes the meaning of the original sentence.

The original sentence says: A, B or C

So, we cant select a choice (E) that says: A, B AND C.

A, B or C means: any of these three.

A, B AND C means: all of these three.

Clearly different meanings; but remember we have to stick with the original meaning of the sentence, unless the meaning of the original sentence is clearly absurd.

Yes Ashish is right - you cannot change the meaning whatsoever, unless absurd.

In addition, D is correct and parallel because, although not a great sentence, the items in the parallel list are all nouns (additives, preservative, anything - the difference is that they add a clause to further explain the 'anything').
