Need help in preparing Quant

by zerotoinfinite2006 » Tue Aug 17, 2010 2:24 am
Hi,

I am completely new to this forum and it is going to be one of my pioneer post on this forum. My issue is this that I have started preparing for GMAT and I found that I am very weak in quant. With some reference to the success stories at beat the Gmat and I came to know that OG is a good book to sharpen your concept for GMAT.
But my concern is this that does OG is enough to score good in GMAT? How realistic the questions are in OG compare to GMAT? and which book can provide me the idea of question close to the actual GMAT quant question.

Please recommend me books if just in case OG is not enough for my quant preparation.

Thanks in advance.

There are a lot of existing threads with the same question you are asking, and there are book reviews under the Resources tab above. Rather than waiting for a "custom" response, perhaps you should consider searching for the answer.

Zerotoinfinite,

Welcome to the forums! This is actually my first post as well, so I hope you find it helpful. This is my personal experience with the OG.

I work for The Princeton Review, one of the GMAT prep companies associated with BeatTheGMAT. Before I started teaching here, I had to get my score up into the 700 range. I started at a 640. I used only two resources: The Princeton Review methods and techniques, and the OG. My primary study plan was to learn the proper techniques, and then to repeat those techniques on all of the OG problems. I managed to initially get my score to a 720. After teaching many classes using the same methods, and working with the OG problems again and again, I brought my score to a 770. I saw several questions on the GMAT that directly matched problems found in the OG.

Now, that is my personal story, but in short, if you have the right gameplan for attacking the questions on the GMAT, the OG is plenty for practice material. In fact, in my experience, I have yet to need additional problems to bring any tutoring student's score up. The idea really is that you should repeat all of the problems until you have mastered them and their concepts.

As you can imagine, you will also need to secure some practice exam materials as well. The GMAT produces several tests for free under a program call GMATPrep. I have personally taken the exam 8 times, with the intention of scoring at different levels, and from what I can tell it is fairly accurate. Again, on my most recent live GMAT, I saw several problems that identically matched the GMATPrep software. Needless to say, test prep companies produce their own tests as well. I can't vouch for the other companies, but our tests have shown a fairly good correlation to the actual exam in my experience.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me!
