Five students Atul, Bala, Chetan, Dev and Ernesto were the only ones who participated in a quiz contest. They were ranked based on their scores in the contest. Dev got a higher rank as compared to Ernesto, while Bala got a higher rank as compared to Chetan. Chetan's rank was lower than the median. Who among the five got the highest rank?

A. Atul was the last rank holder.

B. Bala was not among the top two rank holders.

If a, b, c, d, and e, respectively, were the scores of the five students Atul, Bala, Chetan, Dev and Ernesto, then

d > e, and c is less than both the median and b. Here, b could be the median as well; who knows?

(1) It says that, a is not median, and that a < c < b and a < e < d. Either b or d could be the highest. Insufficient

(2) If b is not among the top two scores, then either a or d could be the highest. Insufficient

Taken together

Either b or d could be the highest and b is not among the top two scores, then it's d among the five who got the highest score, or it's Dev among the five who got the highest rank. Sufficient

A. If Atul was the last rank holder Chetan Will be fourth, we cant find the ranks of rest of the people. Bala or Dev can get the highest rank

Insufficient

B. If Bala is not among the top two, Atul or Dev can get highest rank

Insufficient

Combining Atul - Last, Chetan - Fourth, Bala - Third, Ernesto - Second and Dev is first

Sufficient

Ajit and sanju U gave the right answer i.e.
'C'
Well going through the question and answer, I found that if we know take both statement A & B we already know that Atul is the last ie. 5th
and Bala may be 3rd or 4th . As we know from question Bala is in higher rank than chetan..

so it is already clear that Bala is 3rd and chetan is 4th. So I don't think there is any need of giving the condition
"chetan's rank was lower than median". The problem can be easily solved without this condition too..
