The subject is the quality so its singular

we can eliminate every answer that has surpass

so eliminate A,C

B can be eliminated as there is comparison between quality of the stones and the stones from eastern Mediterranean.

D can be eliminated as there is comparison between the quality and the quality of eastern Mediterranean.

So IMO

E is the answer.

IMO E

Quality is singular so A,C are wrong
Quality can surpass quality (singular) so B (those) is wrong
D,E - that refers to quality. Now D says "quality of the eastern..) and E says "quality of pieces of eastern)

So E is Correct

In A and C, surpass (plural) does not agree with its subject quality (singular). Eliminate A and C.

In B, the quality...surpasses those is not a parallel comparison. Eliminate B.

D incorrectly compares the quality of early pieces to that [the quality] of the eastern Mediterranean. Also, to not only...but also in lacks parallelism.
Eliminate D.

The correct answer is E.
