Dear All

Need expert advice and fast....I've been trying to increase my accuracy levels on CR and SC sections for the past 10 days and have not been getting to the level I want.Id say on all the practice tests Ive taken till now I get anywhere from 28-31 questions correct out of the 41 questions on the Verbal section and the mistakes are usually in this way

SC - 4-5 Wrong

CR - 4-5 Wrong

RC - 2-3 Wrong

I want to reduce these numbers by 2 questions each in SC and CR so that I can cross the 700 mark.Im taking the GMAT this coming Saturday (3rd Nov)

Please advise....how much and in what way should I practice further in these sections??????

Thanks for the help...

How long have you been studying?

Do you have solid techniques for each type of CR question?

What types of questions do you miss?

Do you miss CR questions because you do not know how to approach them or do you make mistakes and when you are done you say - I should have gotten this one right?

You can improve in the time you have but you need to know what to focus on...if you give more information we can help.

Thanks.I'll take all the help/advice I can get...

Firstly, Ive been seriously preparing for the last 2 months.(but now Im questioning whether I gave CR/Verbal its due time)

My weakness lies in Assumption,Inference and Weakness based questions.

Its halfway, there are some questions that make me go "Yes,I shouldve got this one right" and some where I go "How on earth could this be the answer?" (Id say these are mostly assumption based or weakness)

Thanks

Additionally Id like to mention how I tackle each question...

First I see what sort of CR question it is,namely Assumption,Inference,Conclusion,Weakness,Strengthning ,Bold,Completing the argument or Paradox.

Then I try to break down the argument and conclusion.

See what Ive been asked again...

Go through the answer choices and cross out the definite wrong ones (in this however Ive seen i sometimes even rule out the answer) and then scan agin and make a decision for the answer.

Here are some postings that I have made on how to approach different questions.

Select the areas that you need to work on. I try to explain things in a way that is based on simple rules and steps that you should be able to learn in the next day or so. This is the key. To have repeatable methods that you can rely on.

I see that I do not have a particular weaken question in the links below so I will find one and post that link for you as well.

Remember, for verbal the key is to narrow your focus. That is the key for CR and SC both.

Oh and you can start with this article before you go to the posts below. https://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/2011/02/ ... duncan-way

david,
she said that she is scoring around 30/41 correct on verbal. isn't that enough to get around 38V on GMAT. regardless of difficulty, this is what i have seen on GMAT PREP. whenever i used to make around 11 mistakes, my verbal score was around 38V

vikram -

It depends on which questions are missed. There is a wide latitude of scores that can be earned by missing the same number of questions. It really depends on what the level of those questions missed are. For example, 12 questions missed on the Quant section can earn you the 85th percentile or the 60 percentile.

That is why it is so important to always have a strong methodology that prevents careless errors and it also why it is so important to be able to do the lower and mid level questions with a high degree of accuracy. 11 questions missed that are all at the 500 level and below can mean a lower score than 11 questions missed that are all above the 600 level. That is why it is sort of funny to me when people say they only want to study 700+ level questions. You have to get the others right to even get there.
