sentence correction

Added to worries about budget cuts and costs of living increases, the administrators of public health care facilities mush contend with the possibility of a strike by employees.

A) Added to worries about budget cuts and cost of living increases
B) Added to budget cuts and increases in the cost of living
C) In addition to worry about cuts in the budget and as the cost of living increases
D) Added to their worrying about budget cuts and cost of living increases
E) In addition to worrying about budget cuts and increases in the cost of living



for choice E - how are they parrellel? Can someone break it down for me how they are parellel.

The splits:

Added to ..., administrators

--> It means that the administrators are added to worries/budget. It changes the intended meaning of the sentence. Eliminate A, B, and D.

In addition to worry about X and Y, where X and Y should be parallel.

In the option C, we can see that X and Y are NOT parallel.

C) In addition to worry about cuts in the budget(X) and as the cost of living increases(Y)

But in the option E, we have X and Y parallel.

E) In addition to worrying about budget cuts (X) and increases in the cost of living(Y).

-> In the option E, Worrying has clearly modified "administrators".

E is the answer.

thanks, can you break it down even further for me? Like where are the verbs and what parts don't need to be parellel. thanks.

Firstly, 'added to' is a bit awkward as an expression. 'In addition to' is better.

Secondly:

In the original sentence (and in B and D for similar reasons), the big mistake is the modifying phrase Added to ..., which modifies the administrators and this is illogical. The administrators cannot be added to, not in this context.
As for Parallelism:
Answer A: No parallelism issue, but is should be cost and not costs (unless it is a typo).
Answer B: No parallelism problem, but there is a change in meaning; where did the 'worries' go?
Answer D: (again 'added to' is awkward); 'cost of living increases' is awkward; we usually say 'increases in the cost of living'.
Answer C: In addition to worry is incorrect - it should be : In addition to + ing or In addition to + noun, but NOT in addition to + verb. Also: cuts in the budget is wordy; As Nazar780 explains, it is also not parallel but the whole first part is a phrase (In addition to worry about cuts in the budget) but the second part is a full on clause (as the cost of living increases)
Answer E: Think of 'worrying' as your anchor word here. The administrators are worried about X and Y ( cuts and increases) whereby both X and Y are nouns.

In this sentence your hint is the 'and' that shows there are two things the administrators are worried about. We also know this because the rest of the sentence tells us of something else they must contend with.
