In D, which seems to refer to the Napoleonic Wars, implying that the Sixth Coalition attacked the First French Empire in the NAPOLEONIC WARS. The intended meaning of the original sentence is that the Sixth Coalition attacked the First French Empire in the BATTLE OF LEIPZIG.

In the BATTLE OF LEIPZIG.
Context makes it clear that in the Battle of Leipzig is NOT serving as an adjective modifying the First French Empire.
WHICH First French Empire?
The First French Empire IN THE BATTLE OF LEIPZIG.
If in the battle of Leipzig is an adjective, the implication is that there are OTHER First French Empires -- a meaning that makes no sense -- since by definition there is only ONE First French Empire.
Thus, we know that in the battle of Leipzig is serving as an adverb modifying attacked.
