one more Halley's comet question

by hemanth28 » Sun Jun 21, 2009 12:12 am
In no other historical sighting did Halley's Comet cause such a worldwide sensation as did its return in 1910-1911

A. did its return in 1910-1911

B. had its 1910-1911 return

C. in its return of 1910-1911

D. its return of 1910-1911 did

E. its return in 1910-1911

whats wrong with E

OA is C

Looked all over the web for a convincing explanation.. however there was only one thread where I was not quite convinced of the explanation.

Can someone shed light on this question ?

I chose D initially, was sleeping.. :x
I think the clue here is the subject of the question, which is Halley's comet. So if you write the inverted sentence like "Halley's comet did not cause such a worldwide sensation in any other historical sightings as in its return in 1910-11", that will make sense. But i am not sure what "of is doing here? is it correct?
"in its return of 1910-1911"

I think the sentence could be reframed as Halley's comet cause such a worldwide sensation in no other historical sighting as (it did) in its return of 1910 -1911.
So we have ellipsis it did in the sentence. Halley parallels with it rather than its return.

I think the full sentence would be "as it did in its return of 1910-1911" but "it did" is omitted.
With E, "the Comet did cause ... as its return" doesn't parallel. The Comet can't be compared with "its return".

Is use of 'of' in choice C correct? Is it 'return of' or 'return in'?

If they say it is correct, then it is.

the parallelism is between two prepositional phrases.

IN.. ......IN its return...

C is the answer

C. in its return of 1910-1911

D. its return of 1910-1911 did

E. its return in 1910-1911

Looks like options A,B,D, and E imply that the return of the Halley's comet and not the Halley's comet itself caused a worlwide sensation in 1910-1911.

Option C on the other hand says -'in its return' and this points to the comet itself.

So IMO C.

i would quote 800bob from other forum:

Bob's explanation:
If you begin the sentence this way, you can see more easily how to finish it: Halley's comet caused such a worldwide sensation in no other historical sighting as ... The comparison is between other historical sightings and that of 1910-1911, so you could finish the sentence this way: Halley's comet caused such a worldwide sensation in no other historical sighting as it did in its return of 1910-1911. Deleting the superfluous words "it did" you get:
Halley's comet caused such a worldwide sensation in no other historical sighting as in its return of 1910-1911. So it is perfectly correct to write: In no other historical sighting did Halley's comet cause such a worldwide sensation as in its return of 1910-1911. The correct response is C.

I am really confused ..... I selected A thinking that as is used to introduce the clause....and moreover I could n't even sense issue with parallelism here.... Someone mentioned that 'it did' is implied.

In no other historical sighting did Halley's comet cause such a worldwide sensation as (it did) in its return of 1910-1911

Likewise I think if we consider (it did in ) as implied in option E. its going to be same as C and moreover more concise than C
Furthermore, In the construction as above ... how to figure out what element has to be in Parallel.....for instance... can 't
ts return in 1910-1911 in option A be an event which is parallel to in no other historical sighting (another event)..Is is always necessary as in above case to have another event as prepositional phrase.....
What makes option D wrong... Is it just becoz it doesnt starts with in?
