The single-family house constructed by the Yana, a Native American people who lived in what is now northern california, was conical in shape, its framework of poles overlaid with slabs of bark, either cedar or pine, and banked with dirt to a height of three to four feet.

I would pick A based on ||ism.
--> its framework of poles "overlaid with"....,and "banked with"

I agree with sumanr84; A is the correct choice, as it maintains parallelism between "overlaid" and "banked," two items listed to describe the conical house. Choices B and E both have the incorrect "as that of," C has an unnecessary pronoun, and D creates incorrect structure by paralleling "was conical" with "was banked."

Hi Martin, I think the "banked with..." is describing the conical shape and not the family house.. so it should be parallel with "overlaid" and not "with conical .."

So answer should be A.

In its framework , to whom the its refers and how ?... God alone knows...

anf first time i have seen sentence like shape, its framework of where next sentence starts after comma directly without conjunction like AND or BUT etc...
