refute the arg

by bleacherseat » Sun Oct 05, 2008 1:32 pm
Are you still reading the other newspaper in town? Did you know that the Daily Bugle is owned by an out-of-town business syndicate that couldn’t care less about the people of Gotham City? Read the Daily Clarion, the only real voice of the people of Gotham City!

Which of the following most directly refutes the argument raised in the advertisement above?

(A) Over half of the advertising revenues of the Daily Clarion come from firms whose headquarters are located outside of Gotham City.
(B) The Daily Clarion usually devotes more of its pages to out-of-town news than does the Daily Bugle.
(C) Nearly 40 percent of the readers of the Daily Clarion reside outside the limits of Gotham City.
(D) The editor-in-chief and all the other members of the editorial staff of the Daily Bugle have lived and worked in Gotham City for ten years or more.
(E) The Daily Bugle has been published in Gotham City for a longer time than has the Daily Clarion.

I was stuck between B and D, but why not B?

Daily Clarion cannot be the "real voice" of the city as it includes more out-of-town news...

not B bcoz..

(B) The Daily Clarion usually devotes more of its pages to out-of-town news than does the Daily Bugle.

the language is not strong...

even if daily clarion devotes more pages to out of town news, the rest of the pages can still carry the "real voice" of the people ,in comparison to the daily bulge who inspite of dedicating more pages is owned by an out of town syndicate who doesnt care about people of gotham city.

thx

OA is D.

I still can't fathom why is it not B.

If the editors and staff reside in Gotham city , how does this reflect the voice of people.

They could be living in the city, working for an outside syndicate that doesnt care abt Gotham.

I agree with bleacherseat seat.
Moreover, No comparison is made b/w Daily Daily Bugle and Daily Clarion

what if Daily Clarion people have been there for more than 15Y

Pls suggest what is wrong in my thought process as this pattern is pretty common in GMAT..

Even if Daily Clarion ppl have been there for more than 15 Y, it is not necessary that a city should have only one real voice of people. Here is my analysis.

Conclusion: Clarion - the ONLY real voice.....
Argument: Bugle's owner is an Out-Of-Town business syndicate.

To refute the argument, it is required to prove that Bugle staff has roots within Gotham city. D is the only option to do so.

IMO D.

"The editor-in-chief and all the other members of the editorial staff of the Daily Bugle have lived and worked in Gotham City for ten years or more. "
D doesnot prove that you will promote real voice of people.
You can stay at that place for 15-20 years but still can promote other town news.

B looks more appropriate.

I understand the logic and reasoning above on number of years not necessarily related to local news....however we are not at liberty to put our own logic to the statement.....the ad says that because the owner lives out of town, hence the paper shouldn't be purchased.....with the editor-in-chief and other members living in-town....this refutes the argument
