Although he played many memorable parts in his half-century career, it was "The Andy Griffith Show" and his portrayal of bumbling Deputy Barney Fife that brought Don Knotts TV immortality and five Emmy awards.

he in the non underlined part of the sentence and a comma after that, immediately needs to modify Don Knotts.

Hence we are left only with B, C and D

B is wrong coz its modifying not Don but his portrayals.

D is wrong coz Don won awards for what ? his portrayal. and not the other way round.

Hence I'd go for C
