If n is a positive integer is n equal to 100?
(1)sqrt(n) >9
(2) sqrt(n)>11

[spoiler]OA : Given as E[/spoiler]

I would go with B and may be I am having a brain freeze.....

I am surprised you guys were chosing B.
The question is asking "is a positive integer is n equal to 100" not greater than 100.


1) Sqrt(n) could be 10 i.e 100 or 11 i.e 121,12 i.e 144, 13 i.e 169 so insufficient

2) Similarly, sqrt (n) could be 12 i.e 144, or 13 i.e 169

The best answer is E

I get E pretty clearly as well. Unless their is a typo in answer (2) without a doubt E. :?:

Answer is No

I found the question posted on two forums other than BTG.

on testmagic, they have statement 2 as (2) sqrt(n)>11.

If this is the case then the answer would be B.

On gmatclub, the 2nd statement is posted as (2) sqrt(n)<11.

If this is the case, then the answer would be E because n could be anything less than 121 but greater than 81.

heh.

goes to show. these are among the most common, and most insidious, of mistakes.

ALWAYS double- and triple-check inequality signs. you'd be surprised by how easy it is to mistake ">" for "<", especially under test pressure.

there are some things for which it's ok to miss points. this, however, is not one of them.
