MGMAT CAT 2 - SC - 700-800 level!!

by adi_800 » Tue Aug 17, 2010 7:17 am
A question to Manhattan gmat experts!!

How can this question be of a level of 700-800?? This is from one of the Manhattan cats...
I got this one in my mock exam and was surprised to see this one... I thought that I am doing not so good job..This is something that i should not be thinking but i struck this thought coz this questions is exactly same as the one in OG11 and this is Q # 4 in OG11....OG 11 questions are arranged as per the difficulty level and first few questions are counted as not so difficult questions...

Can anyone from Manhattan explain me about this....

According to the National Science Foundation, in 2003 there were 198,113 female science and engineering graduate students, almost 42% of the graduate students in those fields, twice as much as 1981.
A. twice as much as 1981
B. twice as many as 1981
C. double the figure for 1981
D. double what it was in 1981
E. a number double that of 1981's

Below is d question from OG11...

A survey by the National Council of Churches showed that in 1986 there were 20,376 female ministers, almost 9 percent of the nation's clergy, twice as much as 1977.
(A) twice as much as 1977
(B) twice as many as 1977
(C) double what it was in 1977
(D) double the figure for 1977
(E) a number double that of 1977's

From recent test takers, I got to know that SC in actual gmat is convoluted and you dont understand what is being tested...
I am having very good faith in Mgmat exams n in general Mgmat.... as every forum member has..
But things such as this make me worried...

I hope my scores are not inflated...
I really hope!!

That is the correct rating, actually. We set initial difficulty levels when we first write something, but then we test the questions on our own students and then we re-set the difficulty levels accordingly. This question was originally rated a 300-500, but after testing the question on several hundred students, the difficulty level came out at 710, with only about 20% of students overall answering the question correctly. For students who ultimately scored in the 80th percentile, only 40% answered this question correctly. (There's a lot of other data that we evaluate as well, to ensure that the question is what we call "discriminating" - meaning that it appropriately and consistently discriminates between students at different scoring levels.)

So, we go with the data. This is a genuinely hard question from the point of view of many students. The good news is, you thought it was easy! :)

i know this thread is pretty old, but i feel compelled to add my usual comment(s) about "difficulty level":
if you are stressing out about the "difficulty level" of questions, then you have the wrong study priorities.

basically, the point of studying is to get TAKEAWAYS -- general lessons that will apply to other problems. the problem at hand isn't really of any importance; it's just a vehicle for you to learn general lessons that you can then turn around and apply to other problems.
given this fact, "difficulty levels" don't matter at all -- since it's perfectly possible (and actually quite common) for an "easy" problem to yield all the necessary takeaways that are required to solve much "harder" problems, and vice versa. if you concentrate your studies on problems with a particular difficulty rating, you'll just be robbing yourself of the opportunity to learn valuable takeaways.

this is especially true on verbal, on which "difficulty level" is just a group average that is basically meaningless from person to person.
for instance, there are SC problems that are "high difficulty" just because they involve some idiom that most people don't know -- but, for people who do know that idiom, they are easy. for similar reasons, there are SC problems that are "low difficulty" but are really hard for some students.
