demographers

by schumi_gmat » Fri Sep 12, 2008 10:29 am
To develop more accurate population forecasts, demographers have to know a great deal more than now about the social and economic determinants of fertility.

A. have to know a great deal more than now about the social and economic
B. have to know a great deal more than they do now about the social and economical
C. would have to know a great deal more than they do now about the social and economical
D. would have to know a great deal more than they do now about the social and economic
E. would have to know a great deal more than now about the social and economical

What is correct answer? IMO B

I second gmat009, D looks the the correct option.

"social and economicAL" doesn't sound right to me.

I agree with gmat009 and mayur. Furthermore dont you think that E is wrong because in this case we need "do".

I know more than him -? OK
I know more than at that time - > unclear
I know more than he did at that time -> clearer.
I know more than I did at that time -> clear.

As mayur mentioned there is a difference between the adjectives economicAL and economic.

economical means thrifty or curtailing extravagance. Where "economic" means pertaining to the economy in general just as "social" relates to society in general.

my 2 c

The OA is wrong .
There is a difference between the words economic and econimical.
Here economic shold be used.

And D is right because option A has a illogical comparison between demographers and now...
