Why not B but D ?

by hey_thr67 » Sun Jun 26, 2011 5:03 am
If anyone at InterCom Financial Advisers would have anticipated, or even suspected, the impending sale of the Koniko kelp processing plant, they would have advised owners of Koniko stock to unload all shares immediately.

(A) If anyone at InterCom Financial Advisers would have anticipated
(B) Had anyone at InterCom Financial Advisers anticipated
(C) If any people at InterCom Financial Advisers would have anticipated
(D) If any people at InterCom Financial Advisers had anticipated
(E) If anybody at InterCom Financial Advisers anticipated

Simply to maintain the IF..., THEN... structure. If we don't use IF , then it appears as opening modifier, which wont be modifying anything.
And here we are introducing conditional If X then Y, so its better to us IF. THEN.

Thanks

Hi,
I believe B is incorrect because, 'they' cannot refer to anyone(singular) where as in D 'they can refer to 'any people(plural)'. I have never come across usage of 'any people'. So, expert opinion might be better here.
Can the OP post the source as well.
Cheers!

Things are not what they appear to be... nor are they otherwise

Ohk ... I missed the they part... but is "any people" in option D correct ? I first time encountered this construction.

yup any can be used for both singular and plural, ANY falls into the category of SANAM pronouns which can either be singular or plural........
