Help needed with GMAT study

Hi everyone ,

I recently took my first GMAT prep test and got a score of 450 with 23 in Quant and 27 in Verbal.

I also took a MGMAT CAT and scored 550. I'm good at calculating and analysing problems. My goal is to get 720+. Based on the advice of rich, I've now changed my training plan from just Quant for a month followed by verbal to studying both simultaneously. I got enrolled in an institute locally and my classes started today.

I plan on giving my gmat in April which me leaves me with roughly 3months. I can take up more time if needed but it would be great if I can pump it up in this time.

My plan would be as below: Please critique it and help me to make it better.

Class for three hours in the morning - Tuesday and Thursday.

Follow up the class with worksheet of the same topic until noon.

Use MGMAT guides for the same topic and solve problems for the same topic.

Classes for three hours - verbal - Monday and Wednesday

Follow up with more sets of strategies discussed in class.

Use MGMAT guides for the same topics.

On weekends , Test on the topics learnt in the week.

Hi monmonsta,

There's a significant difference between a 450 and a 550, so there's some question as to which of these two scores (if either) is an accurate assessment of your skills. I suggest that you take your next CAT only AFTER you've put in some study time (at least another 1-2 weeks).

When it comes to studying for the GMAT, there's no way to know if a particular approach will 'work' for you until you've put in some time/effort and tried it out - so I don't have any additional suggestions at this point. In a couple of weeks - once you've taken your next CAT - you should post back here with your scores and we can discuss how best to proceed.

Hey Rich,
It's been two months if not more since I started preparing. I couldn't give as much time as I thought I could.

After my classes, I took a full CAT and scored Q44 and V29 consistently.

I'm lagging behind in verbal and I did not yet go through mgmat books. So I'll be taking the cat once again after my verbal prep is done.

I need help figuring out how to get my score from 610 to 710. I understand that if I can get the verbal score to V44, it should do it. Any tips?

Hi monmonsta,

There are a variety of score 'combinations' that will get you to a 710+ and many of them do NOT require a score as high as a V44. Thus, before you put all of your energy into honing your Verbal skills, you should also consider what else you could do to raise your Quant scores. A Q44 means that you handled most of the 'math questions' that you faced on your CATs fairly well, but you made some little mistakes and you missed out on lots of 'strategy-based' points.

Since it's been over 2 months since your original post in this thread, I'm hoping you can provide some updated information on your timeline and goals:

1) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
2) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
3) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

I'm planning to take it two months from now. I.e, May last week or June first week. My priority right now is to be done with the gmat and I feel that I can wait if need be to apply to schools of my choice.

I have rotman and queens on my mind along with SMEAL. Any advice on these is also highly welcome.

Hi monmonsta,

While this might seem like a minor point, you have to be mindful about your REAL goals. Wanting "to be done" with the GMAT is NOT the same as wanting to earn the best score that you're capable of earning. If you're applying to a highly-competitive Program or are interested in applying for Scholarships, then a higher GMAT score will likely improve your chances in both areas. I only bring this up because some Test Takers are so focused on 'deadlines' (and/or "being done" with the GMAT) that they fail to achieve their REAL goal: getting into their first-choice Business School.

From your post, it's not clear when you took this last practice CAT, but if it's been more than 3 weeks, then I suggest that you take a new, FULL-LENGTH CAT (with the Essay and IR sections) so that we can get a sense of your current skills, strengths and weaknesses. When you have that score, you should report back here. That data will help to define how you might need to adjust your studies (and you don't want to wait too long to make those adjustments).

As far as Admissions questions are concerned, I suggest that you speak with an Admissions Expert. There's a Forum full of them here:

Thanks Rich! I understand what you mean. I want to be done with the GMAT was meant in a way to convey the importance of getting the score right with no importance placed on the time or the admission deadlines. I took the CAT a week ago and will surely take a test two weeks down and report it here. P
