Suggestion plz

by BellTheGMAT » Sun Nov 21, 2010 1:07 am
Hi Gurus/ Moderators/ Champs,

Kindly suggest from your experience and logic whether I have gained the level of performance to score 710+ in GMAT?

I had given GMAT in 2006, scored 640; again in 2008, scored 620 :( I admit that though I was studying hard, but I was not able to concentrate much on logic, patterns and analysis of SC and CR. Though I had scored 49 in quant, but verbal was dismissal in both the attempts.
However, for past 2 months, I am again preparing for GMAT with more concentrated efforts and below are different scores from my mock test in past 1 month-

1 Manhattan Online free test = 600 (45, 28)
2 Kaplan CAT1 CD = 610 (42, 31)
3 Kaplan Diagnostic Test Online = 640 (47, 37)
4 Kaplan CAT2 CD = 590 (50,29)
5 GMATPrep test2= 670 (50, 30)

Hi there,

In answer to your question, you are not there yet, I would not feel comfortable saying that you can achieve the 710 (although is is possible, your scores suggest a bit lower than the 710). Mostly it is because of the distribution of the score. While the quant is great the verbal is stuck at that 30 mark which tells me that you are having trouble probably not with the basic Verbal aspects and easier question types but the more medium to advanced topics including in the SC (for example perhaps you do not see ambiguities, changes of meaning, or altered sentence structure questions well). It could even have to do with your reading and CR skills. If you have trouble with reading skills, then this can easily translate to trouble with CR skills as well.

It would be interesting to know how you scored in all areas in the Verbal. This needs to be done so that the particular area(s) can be dealt with properly. You may need an overhaul of technique or it can be simple tweaking in all 3 Verbal parts. For now, it is hard to tell with the little information made available. Especially in the Test Prep exams (but in the others as well), I suggest you do a serious analysis of where you made the mistakes and what question tyoe it was exactly. You may start to see a pattern.

Thanks Isaac and Karan.

After going through your post, I tried to analyze and investigate my mistakes further... and surprisingly, they were surely the ones more related with what you had pointed - ambiguities, clarity of meaning. I went back to basics and tried OG SC list again.

Recently I gave Manhattan CAT test 2, and scored 680 (48, 36). This time I somehow managed to cross 35 target in verbal, but still I need more improvement in CR - "Draw conclusion", "Inference" and SC "Clarity of meaning - modifiers, parallelism, pronouns".... My accuracy for SC (in this test) is about 70%, and CR is about 60% :( The moment, question level goes to 700-800 level, I get the question wrong :(

Can you suggest some reference to practice more on specific "Clarity of meaning" SC and CR?? Any tips would be helpful.

Hi All,
I take this opportunity to thank everyone in this forum. Today I gave GMAT and scored 700. Though its a bit less than my target score (710 - 720), but I am still content with the score.
