In 1791 Robert Carter III, one of the wealthiest plantation owners in Virginia, stunned his family, friends, and
neighbors by filing a deed of emancipation, setting free the more than 500 slaves who were legally
considered his property.

(A) setting free the more than 500 slaves who were legally considered
(B) setting free more than the 500 slaves legally considered as
(C) and set free more than 500 slaves, who were legally considered as
(D) and set free more than the 500 slaves who were legally considered
(E) and he set free the more than 500 slaves who were legally considered as

What is the right answer and the right explanation? I am confused between A and B. I dont know why more than the ...is wrong and why the more than is correct.

Correct Answer - A

more than the 500 means he has the 500(total 500) slaves but he set free more than that. This is wrong as he can not see free more slaves than he has.

the more than 500 slaves means has has the more than 500 slaves and he set free all of them

more than 500 simply means he set free more than 500 slaves. he may not free all of them

"setting free the more than 500 slaves who were legally considered his property" is acting as modifier, it modifies emancipation.

C,D and E are incorrect because of modifier error.
B is incorrect because of more than the 500 error.

A is the correct answer as it has modifier at correct place and uses "the more than 500", which is correct and original meaning of the sentence.
Hope it helps
