Goal: From 55% to 80% Quant

by darryl258 » Fri Aug 15, 2008 12:29 am
Hi,

I have recently taken the gmats and scored a 55% in the quant. I would like improve this score to an 80% or so in the next month and a half. Given the short timeline I believe I need to be very focused on my specific weakness and know the differences between a 55% test taker and an 80% test taker.

Any general advice on how I can make this increase?

Thanks!

Well, now that you have given the official GMAT the first thing you need to do is analyze your performance. Review carefully what type of questions you have got wrong in the quant section. For most first timers DS will be the difficult part, if it is the same in your case then you need to focus more on DS. Start with learning the different types of DS questions, once you are done with it, learn a strategy to deal with each type (you will find these strategies in most prep companies books, see which suits you the most).

Again for PS go through the different concepts you are having trouble with i.e. Probability, exponents etc. and try and clear your basics for these concepts. The key is to identify your weak areas and working on them.

You also need to figure out if you have timing issues. On an average in quant you should be spending around 2 minutes on each question. To achieve this target you will need a lot of practice under strict timing conditions.

yah ive been studying on my own for almost 3 months and now im scheduled to take the gmat in a month so im curious how to up my quant score in a short time frame (ie a month or so). i ran searches on google and within this forum and got a ton of hits (which seemed great at first, but after weeding thru them all, they were rather disappointing and useless threads, not to mention - way too time consuming to go thru them all). all i wanted to know was how to increase quant in a short time frame - maybe its not possible :(

i did, spend a few hours researching this forum for quant strategies...and in the resources tab found a few, but in the gmat strategies and math forum, it seems like most ppl on BTG are already scoring high on quant so their focus is more to fine-tune their already great math abilities (baseline isn't the same as mine - im in the 40-50th percentile)...whereas, my focus is to get to their ability! so i havent found much info that will help me. id be happy if i could even reach the 70th percentile!

if anyone can point us non-quant inclined ppl in the right direction, we would appreciate it. trust me, we have looked...(maybe include some specific treads/posts where others have detailed a strategy or more specifically on increasing quant in a month's time)...

moderators - any ideas/feedback?
