SC # 2

A collection of 38 poems by Phillis Wheatley, a slave, was published in the 1770's, the first book by a Black woman and it was only the second published by an American woman.
[A] it was only the second published by an American woman
it was only the second that an American woman published
[C] the second one only published by an American woman
[D] the second one only that an American woman published
[E] only the second published by an American woman

Answer E

My analysis
1. it is ambiguous, can refer to book or black woman (Please correct if my thinking is wrong)
so A and B are out
D is passive construction

Confused in B and E...Please help....

A majority of the international journalists surveyed view nuclear power stations as unsafe at present but that they will, or could, be made sufficiently safe in the future.
[A] that they will, or could,
that they would, or could,
[C] they will be or could
[D] think that they will be or could
[E] think the power stations would or could

Correct Answer - D

. A peculiar feature of the embryonic mammalian circulatory system is that in the area of the heart the cells adhere to one another, beating in unison and adopting specialized orientations exclusive of one another.
[A] beating in unison and adopting
they beat in unison while adopting
[C] beat in unison, and adopt
[D] beating in unison, yet adopting
[E] even though they beat in unison and adopt

Why A is wrong?

Are you sure there is a comma after 1770's. I believe it should be a dash or colon.

Anyway, I would choose E for parallelism.
only the second published by an American woman is parallel with the first book by a Black woman

D is correct because it shows how cells adhere to one another even though they each have some exclusive features. Hence we need to emphasize the contrast. A fails to show this contrast.
D does that with 'yet'.

Very simply, parallelism suggests me to use - C, but that is wrong :(
Can someone please explain me how D is correct and how to cross out C(parallel option) in such questions. Thanks!

I opted for C based on parallel construction, please explain the difference between C and E and why is E better than C.
Thanks!

beating with unison,yet adopting.......
is "beating with unison" a clause? if not why did you use "comma yet" and not only yet, whithout comma?

is "beating in unison" a clause? if not why did you use ",yet"instead of "yet".
"clause, conjunction clause" how does this formation work here?

Hi,

Of the answer options given I think D is best because it shows the contrast.

I searched net to find out more, and I found that the option D that is provided in this thread is not correct. The option in the original question is
D) beating in unison yet adopting

Find below the thread where Ron has explained every option in detail:

Hope it helps.
