Statement 1: There are 5 items in Andrea's shopping cart.
If each item is $3, then total price = $3 * 5 = $15.
This is less than $25 but if each item is $10, then the total price = $10 * 5 = $50.
So, this is greater than $25; therefore statement 1 is NOT SUFFICIENT.

Statement 2: The price of the most expensive item in Andrea's shopping cart is $4.99.
If there are 3 items in the cart, the max. total price = $4.99 * 3 = $14.97. This is less than $25, but if there are 10 items in the cart, max. total price = $4.99 * 10 = $40.99. Therefore, this is greater than $25; Statement 2 is NOT SUFFICIENT.

However, combining both statements together =>
-> There are 5 items in the cart
-> Most expensive item = $4.99
-> Maximum total price = $4.99 * 5 = $24.95

Hence, total price is less than $25, both statements combined together are SUFFICIENT.
Answer = Option C

Let's consider option (1) :

This option only tells us about the number of items but nothing about the cost. Thus we cannot use this to comment on the cost however it might be useful to keep this in mind that she has 5 items in the bag.

Let's consider option (2) :

This option tells us only about the max cost but not about the number of items. For the total price, we need a) cost of each item b) the number of items.
This option, however, tells us about the costliest thing in the bag.

Now consider 1 and 2 together :

If we assume that all items have the same cost and that cost is equal to the costliest item in the bag then we will get the max cost of the bag.
Max cost = Costliest item's price \(\cdot \) number of items
\(= 4.99 \cdot 5\)
\(= \$24.95\)

Now Max cost \(<\) $25.

Therefore the price of the bag is less than $25.

Hence the correct answer is __C__.
