A rectangular floor that measures 8 meters by 10 meters is to be covered with carpet squares that each measure 2 meters by 2 meters. If the carpet squares cost $ 12 apiece, what is the total cost for the number of carpet squares needed to cover the floor?
A) $200
B) $240
C) $480
D) $960
E) $1920

8/2 = 4, so we need 4 squares for the width.

10/2 = 5, so we need 5 squares for the length.

That means we need 4 * 5 => 20 squares. They're each $12, so the cost is 20*$12 => $240.

Hi All,

We're told that a rectangular floor that measures 8 meters by 10 meters is to be covered with carpet squares that EACH measure 2 meters by 2 meters and the carpet squares cost $ 12 apiece. We're asked for the total cost for the number of carpet squares needed to cover the floor. The math in this question can be approached in a number of different ways. You might find it easiest to start with a small 'piece' of the carpet and work your way 'up.'

Since the squares are 2 meters by 2 meters, if way place 4 of those square pieces 'in a row', we'll end up with a piece that is 8 meters by 2 meters. That will cost 4($12) = $48.

If we lay down 5 of those 8x2 meter strips side-by-side along the 'long' edge, we'll have a rectangular piece that is 8x10 meters in length. That would cost 5($48) = $240

Final Answer: B
