Triangle

by dvalenz » Sun Mar 24, 2013 8:22 am
Hi, I think this is the a triangle question.

Here is the question:

P,Q, and R are located in a flat region of a certain state. Q is x miles due east of P and y miles die north of R. Each pair of points is connected by a straight road. what is the number of hours needed to drive form Q to R and then form R to P at a constant rate of z miles per hour, in terms of x,y, and z? (assume x,y, and z are positive)

Thank you

Answer should be
(y + sqrt(x^2 + y^2))/z

Solution steps

Time from Q to R = y/z ...1
Time from R to P = sqrt(x^2 + y^2)/z ...2

Add 1 and 2.

Thanks

Refer to the diagram below,
Image
Total distance covered = QR + RP = y + √(x² + y²)

Hence, total time required = (Total distance covered)/speed = [y + √(x² + y²)]/z
