Rene earns $8.50 per hour on days other than Sundays and twice that rate on Sundays. Last week she worked a total of 40 hours, including 8 hours on Sunday. What were her earnings for the week?

A. $272
B. $340
C. $398
D. $408
E. $476

The OA is D.

During the week Rene worked a total of 40 - 8 = 32 hours at a rate of $8.5 per hour.
On Sunday she worked 8 hours at a rate of $8.50*2 = $17.00 per hour.

Therefore her total earnings for the week were 32*8.50 + 8*17 = $408.

Has anyone another strategic approach to solve this PS question? Regards!

Your solution is great.
Here's one small tip for reducing your calculations by one.

Once we know that Rene's earnings = (32)(8.5) + (8)(17), we can use a nice technique called "Multiplication by Halving and Doubling"
It goes like this: AB = (A/2)(2B)
For example: (18)(3.5) = (9)(7) = 63
And (22)(4.5) = (11)(9) = 99

So, we can take (32)(8.5) and rewrite it as (16)(17)

So, we get:
Rene's earnings = (32)(8.5) + (8)(17)
= (16)(17) + (8)(17)
= (16 + 8)(17)
= (24)(17)
= 408

Sunday earnings = 17$/hr * 8 hrs = $136

Earnings for the other 6 days = 32 hrs * 8.50 $/hr = $272

Total earnings = $136 + $272 = $408.

Rene earned 32 x 8.5 = 272 dollars during the week (except Sunday) and 8 x 17 = 136 dollars on Sunday.

So he earned a total of 272 + 136 = 408 dollars last week.
