by moadhia » Tue Dec 23, 2008 12:26 pm
I was doing a practice question from manhattan and wanted to figure out why answer was put in a certain way.

Question:
Tired of practising, the orchestra decide to walk out on their astonished conductor.

Answer:

decide -> decides and their -> its

I don't understand why 'their' was changed to 'its' ? Please explain.

'The orchestra' is a collective noun, and collective nouns are singular hence we need the singular verb decides and singular pronoun its.
