Absolute Value Error?

by nwerntz » Thu Jan 08, 2009 12:21 pm
I have the 11th edition CMAT Review book.
Subtitled "The Official Guide"

On page 194-195 problem number 20, I either can not understand the answer or there is a possible mistake in the book, which I find hard to believe.

The problem shows a number line with

A being -2
B being -1
C being 0
D being 1
E being 2

The question asks:
"Of the five coordinates associated with points A, B, C, D, and E on the number line above, which has the greatest absolute value?"

The answers are:
(A) A
(B) B
(C) C
(D) D
(E) E

The solution following the problem says:
"The absolute value of a number x is the distance between x and 0 on the number line. The coordinate of point A is farthest from 0 and thus has the greatest absolute value. The correct answer is A."

I do not understand how |-2| is greater than |2|?

Shouldn't the answer be both of A and E?

there is a little mistake on the figure of answer. but the figure of question is correct which says :
E is a smaller than 2 and A is equal to -2.
So choose A.

This was a mistake in the book:

Use that link for a PDF file of all corrections to OG11
