Reapplication strategies:

by garun_77 » Wed Feb 11, 2009 2:53 pm
Hi Lisa:

First of all, I had to admit that I have gained valuable information reading your posts in this forum. I applied to Stanford and Berkeley (only those two) in the first round this year, and have been denied at both these schools without an interview. Since I am planning to reapply to these two schools next year, here I am looking for your valuable advice. These are the only schools I want to reapply to, not only because of the "fit" factor but also due to my family's desire to be in the bay area.

FYI, both these schools do not offer any feedback. So I am clueless in terms of what to improve/address in my reapplication for the next year. One thing I am serious about is to hire the services of an admissions consultant to help with my applications, especially the essay portion.

I have a 710 GMAT (85th percentile in Quant and 89th percentile in Verbal), which falls within the middle 80% range at Stan and Berk, but slightly below their average. I have a 3.23 GPA from IIT (the best UG school in India), which is below the middle 80% range and well below their average.

Do you think I should retake the GMAT to get on the higher side of the middle 80% range (750 or above) at these schools to compensate for my low GPA? Also, will it help to take a couple of calculus/economics courses at a local community college and do well so that it offsets my low GPA? These are the two things I want to make a decision on right away and work on them to get a head start. I know that I need to improve on other areas of the application such as essays, resume, recommendations, etc.. But first thing first. Your professional opinion will be greatly appreciated. Also, this is my brief profile (latest) to give you a complete picture.

Dear A,

I'm sorry to hear that Berkeley and Stanford did not see your potential and passed on your applications this year. Based on what you posted, I would say an admissions consultant for essay help would be worthwhile on your re-applications. While your GMAT is close to the average, retaking the test to increase your score above the average could also be helpful. I don't think additional coursework is necessary in your case based on your GPA and GMAT quant score. The courses won't hurt you, but I don't know that they will help strengthen your application. My best guess is that your essays, resume, and recommendations probably did not present you in as strong a light as they could.

Best of luck to you,
Lisa

Hi Lisa,

Thanks for the quick response. My concern about the GMAT (710)/GPA (3.23) combination I applied with stems from the general feedback I received from Berkeley. Here it is:

“Unfortunately, due to the number of applications that we receive, we are unable to offer individualized feedback to all denied applicants. We recommend that you compare yourself to our current student profile (https://mba.haas.berkeley.edu/community_02.html) to identify areas in which you may fall short that you could improve for next year if you chose to reapply”.

What do you think? The only objective parameters in Berkeley’s student profile were GPA, GMAT, and the number of years of work experience. While my experience (7 years) is above Berkeley's average (5 years), I fell short of its average GMAT (714) and GPA (3.54). By the way, Stanford’s average was 730 from last year. Anyway, I do not want to overanalyze, but I am inclining towards retaking the GMAT test. Additionally, I checked out the Stacy Blackman website and opted for a free consultation before I take a plunge.

Thanks,
A.
