Career goals - Which concentration??

by vivianef » Mon Aug 08, 2011 3:33 pm
Hi everyone,

Several of the programs I will be applying to have both a Finance and an International Studies concentration.

I currently work for a mid-size commercial bank that is part of a large, international financial group.

My post-MBA goal is to continue in the banking industry, but to find a management position that also has an international function. One plausible option would be to stay within the parent of my current company, which is headquartered in Japan but has offices worldwide. Other options I would be interested in would be in an organization such as the World Bank or the International Monetary Fund (IMF).  Given these goals, and presuming I can't have two concentrations, do you think I would be better served in Finance or International Studies?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You could do both. I think you also should be determining those schools at which your target companies recruit. Go to the Career Services page of each MBA program and look at the employer list. So for example both IMF and World Bank recruit at Columbia partly because of its NYC location.

I would also recommend NYU Stern both because of its location and because of its specializations like Global Business. (https://www.stern.nyu.edu/AcademicProgra ... CON_020088)

Well, presuming you can only apply to one, I would say International Studies. Although I'm sure you will take some finance courses, you probably know a lot more than most people given your experience, so it seems that you gotta focus the learning where you lack the experience.
