Speed

by nidhis.1408 » Fri Aug 10, 2012 1:12 pm
If a car traveled from Townsend to Smallville at an average speed of 40 mph and then returned to Townsend along the same route later that evening, what was the average speed for the entire trip?

(1) The trip from Townsend to Smallville took 50% longer than the trip from Smallville to Townsend.
(2) The route between Townsend and Smallville is 165 miles long.

a. Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
b. Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
c. Both statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER one ALONE is sufficient.
d. EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
e. Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

Kindly help me with this problem.

To determine the average speed for the whole trip, we need to know the speed from Smallville to Townsend.
Time and rate are RECIPROCALS.

Statement 1:
The time to Smallville = 3/2 of the time to Townsend.
Thus, the speed to Smallville = 2/3 of the speed to Townsend:
40 = (2/3)x
x = 60.
SUFFICIENT.

Statement 2:
No way to determine the speed to Townsend.
INSUFFICIENT.

The correct answer is A.
