if x intercept is positive i.e. 4 and slope is also positive, y intercept has to be negative.

base = 4

area = 12 = 1/2 * b * h

4*1/2*h = 12

h= 6

therefore the y intercept is -6.

Whats the answer.

does that opposing rule you mention always hold true? in what cases what the X and Y coordinates have the same sign? Maybe when the slope is negative?
