Math PS Question - Help

by theldot » Wed Jan 04, 2012 7:50 pm
I am doing something wrong here.

Can someone help and explain?

If the sale price of a television is $216 after a 10% reduction was made, what was the regular price of the television?

I was setting up the formula as follows:
216=x + .10X
216=1.10x
Dividing by 1.10 is giving me the incorrect value.

What am I doing wrong here?

Let the regular price of television = $X
Then, price after 10% reduction = X - 10% of X = X - 0.1X = 0.9X
So, 0.9X = 216
X = 240

Therefore, the regular price of television =
$240
Reduction is the term used, hence you shld do subtract instead of adding 0.1

216=x - .10X
216=0.9x
