Must be a typo?

by caspermonday » Thu Oct 22, 2009 6:00 am
Question from EST 48.

Employees received wage increases ranging from $0.3 to $0.875 per hour. What was the minimum wage increase for a 40-hour week?

a. 12
b. 23
c. 34.8
d. 35
e. 35.2

The answer is obvious but the OA is D! Is this a typo error or am I missing something? Thanks![/spoiler]

Choice D shows the minimum wage once the change is in effect (0.875 * 40), but the question asks for the increase in minimum wage. Wage went from 12 to 35, a change of 23. Choice B should be the answer.

What's EST? I've seen a number of questions posted from it and many have had errors - I'm definitely not impressed by this source.

My reading of the question is that different employees got different increases; the smallest increase is 30 cents and the largest is 87.5 cents (first thing I dislike about this question, how can you get paid in fractions of cents?).

Q: what's the least extra amount that could be earned by someone who works a 40 hour week?

The answer should simply be the minimum possible increase (30 cents) * 40 hours = $12.

Stuart, my thinking was exactly the same as yours. I posted the question to make sure that I am not missing anything. Apparently, I am not. :)
