In the rectangular coordinate system, if line A is parallel to one of the axes, does line A contain the point (4, 5) ?

(1) Line contains the point (4, -5).
(2) Line crosses the x-axis

OA is C
However IMO E

because from st1: we dont know whether the line is parallel to x or to Y
from St2: we cant say the point.
combining it mentioned that the line is parallel to Y axis but that doesnot mean that the line is extended until (4,5).The length of the line might finish at (4,3)or (4,4) etc.
therefore I think it is E.
Am I missing something?

Hi,

Posting for the first time.

Line A is parallel to on of the axes means the equation of the line is
y=c
or
x=c

1) says the line passes through (4,-5)
So the line can be x=4 or y=-5
Insufficient

2) says line crosses the X Axis
This means y is not constant.
So the equation is x=c
However we dont know what c is.
Insufficient

Combining both however, we get x = 4.
Hence we know that (4,5) is on the Line.


I dont think you should consider a line ending at a certain point. Once you get to the equation of the line, the line can be extended indefinitely.

Nope.. The definition of a line is that it can extend infinitely to either ends. You are probably confusing it with the definition of a segment which has a fixed length
200 or 800. It don't matter no more.
