Percents Practice

by sgraves » Mon Dec 28, 2015 10:40 am
After a recent CAT one of the topics I needed to work on is FDP's. I have the Manhattan Books and I first went through the FDP chapter in the Foundations book. I have recently finished up the corresponding strategy guide. I have done about half of the topic related questions from the OG guide but I read that I shouldn't be solely doing problems from one topic all at one time. Are there any other resources available that I can use to work on this topic?

To help you focus on one topic at a time, you can use BTG's tagging feature. For example, here are all of the questions tagged as percents questions: https://www.beatthegmat.com/forums/tags/ ... c/percents

Also, we have a free FDP module (which we call Arithmetic on our site) with free FDP-related videos and practice questions here - https://www.gmatprepnow.com/module/gmat-arithmetic

Hi sgraves,

How did you score on this recent CAT (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores)?

As far as your Quant performance is concerned:
1) How many questions did you get wrong because of a silly/little mistake?
2) How many questions did you get wrong because you couldn't remember how to do the 'math' involved?
3) How many questions did you have to rush on at the end (because you were low on time)?

MCAT - 440 Q28 V24

As far as your Quant performance is concerned:
1) How many questions did you get wrong because of a silly/little mistake? 18 - this also includes questions that could of used TEST IT/ TEST the Answers
2) How many questions did you get wrong because you couldn't remember how to do the 'math' involved? 2
3) How many questions did you have to rush on at the end (because you were low on time)?

Id say the last 7 I rushed as I was running out of time. I didn't have that problem on the MBA.com CAT's I have taken. The MCAT ones I have taken I involve a litter more computation on the quant side, at least to me.

Hi sgraves,

The MGMAT CATs are generally regarded by many Test Takers as being a bit tougher than the GMAC CATs (and by extension, the Official GMAT). However, your own analysis puts the focus on silly/little mistakes (and not on any specific content area). The easiest way to eliminate little mistakes from your work is to 'up' the amount of note-taking (and work that you do on the pad). Since most Quant questions are actually not that difficult to answer, YOU have to be committed to doing the necessary work to avoid those mistakes and pick up all of those correct answers/points. The good news is that the work is usually pretty easy to do; the bad news is that you must be rigorous with your commitment to do that work (for the entirety of the GMAT - 4 hours).

If silly mistakes are hurting your score, then it's important that you identify and categorize these mistakes. Some examples might include:
- sloppy writing causes a 7 to mysteriously turn into a 1
- you forget that a question is an EXCEPT question.
- you fail to notice crucial information such as x is an integer or w < 0.
- you calculate Pat's current age when the question asked for the Pat's age 5 years from now.
- and so on

Once you have identified the types of mistakes that YOU typically make, you will be able to spot situations/questions in which you're prone to making errors.

I write about this and other strategies in the following article: https://www.gmatprepnow.com/articles/avo ... teaks-gmat

Cheers,
Brent
