Statement 1: x^y = 1
This is possible with either of the following cases,
  • 1. x = any number and y = 0 --> xy = 0
    2. x = 1 and y = any value --> xy may or may not be greater than 1

Statement 2: No information about x.

Not sufficient

1 & 2 together: As y = -1, x^y = x^(-1) = 1/x
Hence, 1/x = 1 --> x = 1
Hence, xy = -1 < 1

Sufficient

The correct answer is C.
