A scalar solution path is the most direct method of solving this problem.

Since $0.66 is the tax for $12, the tax for $20 must be 20/12 of $0.66, a fraction that reduces to 10/6.

$0.66 * 10/6 = 0.11 * 10 = $1.10, which is answer choice (B).

Hi ardz24,

We're told that the sales tax on a $12.00 purchase is $0.66. We're asked what the sales tax would be on a $20.00 purchase. The math behind this question can be approached in a variety of ways (depending on how you want to think about the ratios involved.

Since sales tax is a fixed percentage of the purchase price, we could set up the ratio in the following way:

$12/$20 = $0.66/X
3/5 = $0.66/X
3X = $3.30
X = $1.10

Final Answer: B

If we let n = the sales tax on the 20 dollar purchase, we can create a proportion and solve for n:

0.66/12 = n/20

20 x 0.66 = 12n

13.2 = 12n

13.2/12 = n

1.1 = n

Thus, the sales tax is $1.10.

Answer: B
