17. At a certain university, if 50 percent
of the people who inquire about
admission policies actually submit
applications for admission, what
percent of those who submit
applications for admission enroll in
classes at the university?
(1) Fifteen percent of those who
submit applications for admission
are accepted at the university.
(2) Eighty percent of those who are
accepted send a deposit to the
university.

I dont get an E.

If 100 ppl enquired,
50 submit applications.

Stmt I:
15% of 50 = 7.5 are accepted
No clue abt how many enrolled.
Insufficient

Stmt II
No clue about how many are accepted.
Insufficient

Combining
if 7.5 are accepted,
then 80% of 7.5 actually deposit money or enroll.
i.e. 6 ppl.

So the req value can be calculated.
Hence C

Hi,

(E) is definitely the correct answer.

The question we're trying to answer is what percent who apply enrol in classes. (1) tells us what % are accepted, but we have no clue how many of those actually enrol; similarly, (2) tells us how many put down a deposit, but we have no clue how many of those actually enrol.

Remember, we can't make any assumptions in data sufficiency. Do we know if everyone who puts down a deposit actually enrols? Nope, no idea.

Taken together we still have no info about enrolment.
