a1 = 1
a2 = 1+4 = 5.
a3 = 5+4 = 9 = 1+8 = 1+2*4 = 1+(3-1)*4.
a4 = 9+4 = 13 = 1+12 = 1+(4-1)*4.
So an = 1+4*(n-1) = 4n - 3.

Thanks Rahul! I forgot about using the arithmetic sequence formula: a1+ (n-1) *difference

1+ (n-1) 4 = 4n -3
