Anup was asked to find the value of 7/12 of a sum of money. Instead of multiplying the same by 7/12,he divided it by 7/12 and his answer exceeded the correct answer by 95. The correct answer is:

(A) 48

(B) 89

(C) 84

(D) 69

(E) 49

Let's say that x is the sum of money we are looking for.
you get: x/(7/12) = 95 + x*7/12.. Subtracting 7x/12 from each side you get that (144x - 49x)/84 = 95, which is equivalent to 95x/84 = 95. So x will be 84.

Answer C.

7x/12 +95 = x/(7/12)

7x/12 + 95 = 12x/7

49x/12 + 95(7) = 12x

49x + 95(7)(12) = 144x

95(7)(12) = (144-49)x

95(7)(12) = 95x

7(12) = x

x=84

Ans = C

I guess they are asking the correct answer. The correct answer what Anup should have got is 7/12(X).
Shouldn't it be 7/12(84)=49?
I guess the answer is E.
Correct me if I am wrong.

I think you are right. $84 is the original amount of money, not 7/12 * the original amount of money.

Anup's answer was $144 ($84 / 7/12)
The correct answer is $144-$95 = $49

True,
I answered it as 49...but the correct answer was 84 in the mock test...But i guess 49 is correct.

Interesting that $84 was the correct answer in the mock test. The wording could have been a bit clearer about what answer they wanted - the original sum or money or 7/12 of that sum.

I got this question in CRACK GMAT exam...my score was pathetic 540...Infact it demotivated me...but my Manhatta and GPRPE scores were 700 so keeping fingers crossed for final exam
