p6. Doctors still know little about how the Listeria bacterium is spread and why the disease it causes, listeriosis, afflicts some people in a contaminated area though it spares many others.
(A) though it spares
(B) where it spares
(C) despite sparing
(D) when sparing
(E) while sparing

what is wrong in A?

IMO - E

Because it is the most concise and fits into the sentence perfectly..

"While" seems to bring out the comparison much better than "when". "When" I guess should be used to refer to a point in time,,

OA please

IMO E.

I think the reason is

'....listeriosis, afflicts some people in a contaminated area though it spares many others. '
The subject reference of 'it' is not very clear, so A and B can be ruled out. Among C, D and E, the most appropriate option would be 'E'.
OA please.

"it" is used incorrectly in A.. it can refer to the bacterium or the disease.. not very clear.. same for B. Hence E should be the correct choice.
