cattle breeders

In recent years cattle breeders have increasingly used crossbreeding, in part that their steers should acquire certain characteristics and partly because crossbreeding is said to provide hybrid vigor.

A. same
B. in part for the acquisition of certain characteristics in their steers
C. partly because of their steers acquiring certain characteristics
D. partly because certain characteristics should be acquired by their steers
E. partly to acquire certain characteristics in their steers

OA explanation didn't convince me. I wonder if someone can give more hint to the answer.

IMO it should be D, partly because makes the sentence parallel.

IMO "E".

I shall go with E.

-- partly is better. 'that their steers should' introduces a new clause and makes the sentence discontinuous.
B. in part for the acquisition of certain characteristics in their steers
-- partly is better + passive
C. partly because of their steers acquiring certain characteristics
-- It is not a cause..so not 'because of'
D. partly because certain characteristics should be acquired by their steers
-- Again, 'should be acquired' is wrong.
E. partly to acquire certain characteristics in their steers

clear cut the answer shd be B .Coz out of all this is the only which maintains parrellism with second part of the sentence.

Question is why are they going for cross breed?
-for the acquisition of certain characteristics in their steers
AND
--because crossbreeding is said to provide hybrid vigor.


what is OA?

The OA is E. Here's the explanation:

The sentence gives two reasons that cattle breeders use crossbreeding; these reasons should be introduced in parallel ways with the word partly. The infinitive to acquire clearly and concisely conveys the purpose of the crossbreeding.

B. In part should be partly; wordy and awkward use of prepositional phrases.
D. Passive voice should be acquired by is awkward and illogical
E. Correct. In this sentence, the word partly is used to introduce both reasons; the phrase to acquire certain characteristics is clear and concise.

For me, I just don't see partly to is parrallel to partly because. I know all other choices have problem too. I guess this is the case that you can't find the right answer, but only the best answer available.

"Should" is used when required to imply "order" or "rightness"

however, it is BY CHOICE the catlebreeders want to acquire those qualities in their cattle.

So D is not better than E.

" partly TO..." and "partly BEACUSE ..." donot seem to be parallel,However,
as it in mentioned in the OG explanation, we need to parallel "partly " in the both the reasons...

E is parallel. Partly to A ... Partly to B.

A - is ungrammatical in using "that": "in part that their steers..."
B - wordy; "for the acquisition of" is less concise that "to acquire"
C- changes the meaning of the sentence in a nonsensical way (the steers are "acquiring certain characteristics" on their own)
D - wordy; "partly because" and "should be acquired" are verbose
E - is concise and parallel, and easily superior as an easy to the other choices
