I have a confusion regarding number line..

suppose there are two points on number line (x on RHS of 0), y(on LHS of 0).

To find x-y, do i consider the -ve sign of y? or do we need to consider the absolute distance only?

I think you've answered you own question.

because y is negative (say -3) and x is positive (say 2)

x-y will be 2 - (-3) = 2 + 3 = 5

which is the distance between the two points.
