Taking the gmat again...consequences?

by gmatfin » Tue Oct 04, 2011 11:35 pm
I have a question.

I have a great score that won't get me denied at any school, but I feel there are still points on the table if I take it again... and want to improve my chances and get a more showy score for scholarship $$$.

Of course, there is always a chance to score worse.

So, is it possible to send all schools my current score report, and if I take it again and get the same or worse score, just not send them the newer score report, so they would never know about my lower score? I don't want to be deceitful, but my friend said that I just have to send them the highest score report, but I'm not sure if he is right.

GMAC sends the score to 5 colleges as a complimentary service. For any more colleges, you need to pay $28 . So if you dont choose the 5 colleges and pay extra money, the scores will be with you.

Many candidates give their GMAT even after they enter the Bschool to add a CV point.

Hey gmatfin--

The schools can actually look up your score themselves, and whenever a school is sent scores (whether it's on test day or later in the process), they get a full report of all scores. So it's pretty difficult to hide scores from a school. It's possible that timing would be on your side, based on the sequence you're laying out (send scores now when apply, test again, not send scores after), however don't count on the fact that a school would never see the subsequent score.

That being said, it's unlikely that a lower score would ever hurt you if you've already done well on the test, so this is probably an unnecessary question.

Also, EssaySnark does not believe that GMAT scores are the major factor weighed for scholarships -- we could be wrong about this, but we're pretty sure that previous academic history is much more important in terms of who gets merit-based funding.

So, might not be a huge advantage in retesting. We actually had a series of posts about this in September (not about that scholarship angle, but in general about when is a score "good enough"):

(And please forgive the snarkiness of that post - it's totally not directed at you!!!)

Good luck!!

To really advise you a good admissions consultant would need to know more. What was your original score and how much better can you do? Was one split worse than the other or were both quant and verbal balanced. Second, how was your gpa or other educational indicators? If your gpa rocked as well from a great school, then you have less of a need to show a super great score. If your GPA was weaker, then yes hitting the gmat out of the park would be more critical.

As always, you can't make these decisions in isolation.
