Is a 30-50 point increase possible with a week of studying?

Hey guys -

New here. I need some opinions. I'm scheduled to take the GMAT next Thursday. I took my first cold, practice exam today and I scored a 650 (43-Q; 37-V). I missed all of the geometry questions in the Quantitative section and most of the incorrect questions were data sufficiency ones. I missed 13 questions in the verbal section. 10 of those 13 were sentence correction questions.

I plan on going through the "Powerscore: Sentence Correction Bible" and Kaplan Math Book over the next week along with a full-length exams and tons of questions.

Am I deluding myself or would it be possible to raise my score to around a 700 with an extensive week of studying based on my deficiencies?

Just curious--how did you do? Sorry I did not see this posting in time, but to answer your question, yes I have seen such dramatic improvement in scores in short period of time. Testing conditions can have an impact as well as a myriad of other psychological factors.

I think if you missed all of the geometry DS questions... you should spend your time on geometry - or at least make sure you spend some time on that in conjunction with SC

Don't spend too much time on Geometry; it's helpful, but is unlikely to make up more than 5-7 of the 37 math questions on the GMAT.

Do, however, focus on the Kaplan methods for Data Sufficiency. It's hard to make judgments about the specifics of your score, but if you can get the basics of DS down, that's a great opportunity to earn some points.

you're not deluding yourself in aiming for a 700 it's just going to take a lot of practice, so be prepared to put in the time... but i will say that in order to reach that 700 you will need to know the basics of geometry down pat. DS will inevitably be on the GMAT so those strategies should always be a focus. I'm sure you know but remember if you can eliminate A in DS you can automatically eliminate D - no if ands or buts about that... leaving you with BCE... if you can narrow it down AT LEAST that much.. then you've increased your chances of guessing correctly, should it come down to that, to 1/3 vs. 1/5 which is better than nothing! keep us posted!
