Og question

by anksm22 » Sun Jun 28, 2015 6:44 am
Canadian scientists have calculated that one human being should be struck every nine years by a meteorite,
while each year sixteen buildings can be expected to sustain damage from such objects.
(A) one human being should be struck every nine years by a meteorite
(B) a human being should be struck by a meteorite once in every nine years
(C) a meteorite will strike one human being once in every nine years
(D) every nine years a human being will be struck by a meteorite
(E) every nine years a human being should be struck by a meteorite

I am confused between D and E . Why did we select "will be stuck"?

"Should be struct" means that the scientists are not sure. If they calculated it, how can they not be sure? Conclusions are generated from calculations. Therefore they should be sure of their calculations.

"Will be struct" means that the scientists are sure it is going to happen because of their calculations.

D: Every nine years a human being SHOULD be struck by a meteorite.
Here, should implies a RECOMMENDATION.
According to scientists, what SHOULD happen every nine years?
In other words, what do the scientists RECOMMEND?
They recommend the following:
that a human being SHOULD be struck by a meteorite.
Not the intended meaning.

The goal of the scientists is NOT to make a recommendation (telling us what SHOULD happen) but to make a PREDICTION (telling us what WILL happen).
According to scientists, what WILL happen every nine years?
E: A human being WILL be struck by a meteorite.
